20 Days Nanda Devi Raaj Jat Yatra 2014 in Uttarakhand  (18-Aug-2014 to 06-Sep-2014)

All those who are interested in culture and are trek enthusiast, the 2014 Nanda Devi Raj Jat yatra is a perfect gateway to total bliss. Nanda Raj Jat Yatra is three weeks long festival and celebrated once in every 12 years so the next one will be in 2025. Its sanctity for locals is equal to Kumbh and it is one of the most lively and colourful festivals in the region. Nanda Devi Raj Jat is the most wonderful pilgrimage in the High Himalayan peaks of Uttarakhand. It combines obscure faith, mysteries and thrills with a flood of devotees. Like the Khumbh it is organized every 12 years.

About Nanda Devi Yatra:

Nanda Devi is seen as incarnation of Goddess Parvati and the devotees gather at Nauti Gaon (Village) which is around 25 Km from Karnprayag in Chamoli one of among Panch Prayags of Uttarakhand, Myth says that Goddes Gaura (Parvati) was the daughter of king of mountains (Sail Putri) who married with a yogi with leopard skin (Lord Shiva). It is believed that Goddes Gaura comes to visits her mother’s places (Mait in local language). All people of locality escort Goddes Gaura to her in-laws place in Gaufati Peak after visit her mother’s place like all Uttaranchali brides do. A four horned rem guides the Raj jat and also the carrier of personal effects of the Goddes. Doli of Goddes. Nanda will be also joined by many Dolis of other prominent Devtas (Gods) of Himalayas. The 280 kilometres and 20 days trek starts from Nauti Village and reaches Homkund on Nandastmi. There are 19 halting places. A deep feeling of faith and reverence for Nanda Devi in Himalayan folk lore reflects the respect held for women in Uttarakhand. The trek passes through some of the most beautiful and some very difficult spots in the region. I was told that a four-horned Ram is born once in every twelve years, and the Ram leads the procession. People do not go beyond Homkund, from where the ram takes the gifts and disappears in the glaciers. Of course, this may be just a fable but the journey itself must be amazing.

These remains have been preserved in he alpine conditions for centuries. It is believed that these are the remains of about 300 persons who died about 500-600 years ago. There are may theories explaining these findings, but none are satisfying. Hence the lake is also known as the ‘Mystery Lake’.
